Floorball 3v3 Mini-Rinks
A floorball 3-on-3 league on small rinks lined with benches, with no goalies and small goals, so every student touches the ball constantly. Students practice attacking with numbers, getting back on defense, and running the officiating themselves.
How to play
- Set up 4 mini-rinks of 15 x 10 yards using benches tipped on their sides as boards so the ball rebounds, with a small goal at each end.
- Form 8 teams of 3 in pinnies (student 25 is a rotating sub) and assign two teams to each rink.
- Explain the modified rules (2 min): no goalie, no one may defend inside a 2-yard crease in front of the goal, and each goal is worth 1 point.
- Play 4-minute games; after each one, the winner moves up a rink and the loser moves down (king's court style).
- After the second game, take a 1-minute break: each team decides who stays back when the other two attack.
- Play 5 games in total; on each rink one player per team calls fouls by raising a hand.
Rules
- The blade stays below the knee; if it goes higher, the other team gets a free hit.
- No body contact, lifting an opponent's stick, or playing the ball with your hand.
- No one may enter the 2-yard crease in front of the goal.
- Safety: after each goal, restart from center with opponents 3 yards away.
Variations
Easier
Add a floater who always plays with the attacking team.
Standard
3 on 3 with no goalie, a 2-yard crease, and bench boards.
Harder
Goals only count after a pass in the attacking half, with a 3-touch limit per player.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student plays on a 2-on-2 rink with a slower foam ball.
- Shy students: assign them to referee the first game so they get familiar with the rules.
- Lower fitness: sub with the extra student every 2 minutes.
Learning goals
- Apply basic attacking and defending principles in small-sided games.
- Organize the team so one player always stays back.
- Referee games and accept calls with good sportsmanship.
Equipment for a class of 25
- floorball sticks: 25
- balls: 6
- small goals: 8
- pinnies: 12
- benches: 8
Teacher tip
Bench boards multiply touches and stop time being lost chasing the ball. Circulate between rinks reminding students about stick height, the rule they forget most.
