Five-Second Counterpress Soccer
A 6v6 game where the team that loses the ball earns a point if it wins it back within five seconds, counted out loud by a scorekeeper. Students practice reacting after a turnover, immediate team pressure, and pacing their effort.
How to play
- Four teams of 6 in pinnies on two 35 x 25 yd fields with two small goals at each end. The extra student serves as scorekeeper.
- Play a regular 6v6 game with no goalkeepers; each goal is worth 2 points.
- When a team loses the ball, the scorekeeper counts out loud from 1 to 5. If that team wins it back before 5, it earns 1 point.
- If the team that won the ball keeps it past five seconds, the pressing team must drop back behind the ball and play continues as normal.
- Play three 6-minute periods with 1 minute of rest, switching opponents; take 1 final minute to discuss who should press first.
Rules
- Press on your feet with no grabbing or pushing; a foul cancels the counterpress point.
- Only clean steals count: interceptions, blocks, or taking the ball with the foot.
- After a goal, the team that was scored on kicks off from midfield.
- Anyone who needs a break says so and exits along the sideline without crossing the field.
Variations
Easier
Count to 8 and play 6v5 in favor of the pressing team.
Standard
Winning the ball back within 5 seconds earns 1 point, and each goal earns 2.
Harder
If the team that won the ball completes 3 passes in a row before 5, it earns the point instead.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student keeps score or plays as an attacking neutral on the sideline.
- Hearing impairment: the scorekeeper counts by raising fingers on one hand.
- Lower fitness: the student alternates one period of play with one as scorekeeper.
Learning goals
- React instantly after losing the ball.
- Organize team pressure close to the ball.
- Pace effort by alternating intense pressure with dropping back.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soccer balls: 4
- small goals: 8
- pinnies (four colors): 24
- cones: 16
Teacher tip
This game is very demanding, so respect the rest breaks and run it after a solid warm-up. Loudly praise the closest player who presses first, because that is the key to the whole game.
