Five-Pass Ultimate Keep-Away
A disc possession game in which a team scores a point by completing five passes in a row without a drop or an interception. Students work on getting open, the no-running-with-the-disc rule, and smart passing decisions.
How to play
- Use cones to set up 3 zones of 20 x 20 yards and form 6 teams of 4 in pinnies; two teams play in each zone and one extra student acts as a floater for the offense.
- Review the key rule (2 min): when you catch the disc, stop within two or three steps and pivot on one foot while you look for a teammate.
- The offense counts passes out loud; after five completed passes in a row they score a point and the disc goes to the other team.
- If the disc hits the ground, leaves the zone, or is intercepted, possession switches immediately and the new team starts counting from zero.
- The marker guards from one arm's length, with no contact, and counts out loud to 8; if the thrower hasn't released it by 8, possession changes.
- Play 5-minute rounds; on the whistle, winning teams move up one zone and losing teams move down one, for three rounds (18 min total).
Rules
- No running with the disc: the catcher stops and pivots.
- No stripping the disc or touching the thrower.
- You can't pass back to the person who just passed to you.
- Safety: always watch the disc when running for it and avoid collisions; no diving on the ground to catch it.
Variations
Easier
Count three passes instead of five and have the defender stay two yards away from the thrower.
Standard
Play 4 on 4 with five passes in a row to score and an 8-second stall count.
Harder
In addition to five passes, the final catch must be made inside a hoop placed in one corner of the zone.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student plays as a stationary passer in the middle of the zone, unguarded, and their pass counts double.
- Shy students or students with autism: keep the same partner as a go-to buddy and give a heads-up before every zone change.
- Lower fitness: shrink the zone to 15 x 15 yards and allow a substitution every round.
Learning goals
- Apply the stop-and-pivot rule after catching the disc.
- Cut to open space to give the thrower a passing lane.
- Work with teammates to keep possession.
Equipment for a class of 25
- frisbees: 3
- pinnies: 13
- cones: 12
Teacher tip
The usual mistake is everyone crowding the thrower; ask for one receiver deep and one short at all times. Use soft discs if the group's throws are still inaccurate.
