Fitness Test Pentathlon: Points for Improvement

Five simple fitness tests run as a team pentathlon in which the best score doesn't count; improvement between the first and second attempt does. It builds self-assessment, peer measurement and teamwork.

How to play

  1. Set up five stations: standing long jump, seated 4-lb (2 kg) medicine ball chest throw, 30-second curl-ups on a mat, sit-and-reach box and a 4x10 m shuttle run (4 min).
  2. Form five teams of five with one worksheet per team. Each team starts at a different station.
  3. At each station everyone takes a first attempt while two teammates measure and record. Then the team gives each person one technique tip.
  4. Each student takes a second attempt. If they improve, the team earns 1 point; if they match their first score, half a point.
  5. Rotate every 4 minutes on the whistle, clockwise, until teams have visited all five stations (20 min).
  6. Final tally: each team totals its improvement points and discusses which technique tip worked best (6 min).

Rules

Variations

Easier

Use three stations and allow a third attempt to earn the improvement point.

Five stations with two attempts and a point for improvement.

Harder

Adaptations

Learning goals

Teacher tip

Post a protocol card at each station so you don't lose time demonstrating. Publicly praise improvement points earned by students with more modest scores.
