Finnish Skittles: Hit Exactly 50
A Finnish precision game where players knock down numbered pins by throwing a wooden stick and must reach exactly 50 points, because going over is penalized. Students work on throwing accuracy, strategy, and mental math.
How to play
- Six sets of 12 sand-filled bottles numbered 1 to 12, packed in a triangle with 1 and 2 in front; chalk a throwing line 3.5 m (about 11 ft) away. Groups of 4 in two pairs (2 min).
- Pairs take turns, alternating partners, throwing a baton underhand.
- If one pin falls, score its number; if two or more fall, score the number of pins knocked down.
- Fallen pins are stood up exactly where they landed, so the setup spreads out; the thrower resets them and jogs back to the line.
- The first pair to hit exactly 50 wins; going over drops a pair back to 25, and so do three misses in a row. Play 6-minute games, switching opponents and keeping score in chalk (18 min).
Rules
- Throw from behind the line, underhand.
- Safety: no one enters the pin area until the baton is on the ground.
- A pin leaning on another pin or on the baton doesn't count as down.
- Each pair keeps its score and the other pair checks it out loud.
Variations
Easier
Play to 30 and drop back to 15 when going over.
Standard
Play to 50 and drop back to 25 when going over.
Harder
For the last 20 points, only single-pin hits count.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: throws seated from 2.5 m, and a partner resets the pins.
- Low vision: large black numbers on white, and a partner describes where the pins are.
- Advanced level: throws from 4.5 m or with the non-dominant hand.
Learning goals
- Adjust force and direction to hit a specific target.
- Choose which pin to hit based on the points needed.
- Keep track of your own and your opponents' scores mentally.
Equipment for a class of 25
- recycled bottles: 72
- batons: 6
- chalk: 6
- markers: 6
Teacher tip
Bottles need some sand and tightly closed caps so they don't fly off. To raise activity, have throwers reset pins quickly and jog back.
