Disc Rescue Freeze Tag
A tag game where tagged students freeze and can only be freed by catching a flying disc thrown by a free teammate. It combines running and dodging with passing and catching the disc, and rewards helping others.
How to play
- Mark a 65 x 65 ft area. Choose 3 taggers in pinnies and hand out 4 soft discs among the other students.
- Taggers try to tag everyone else. A tagged student freezes with arms out to the sides and drops any disc they are holding.
- To free a frozen player, a free teammate throws them the disc from at least 10 ft away. If the frozen player catches it, they are free and keep the disc.
- A player holding the disc cannot be tagged but may keep it only for 5 seconds; they must pass it to a teammate or throw it to a frozen player.
- Rounds last 2 minutes. After each round, count the frozen players and switch taggers so everyone gets a turn.
- Play 5 rounds with 30 seconds of rest between them to keep the intensity up.
Rules
- Tag with a gentle touch on the back or shoulder, never a push.
- Taggers may not intercept or grab the disc in the air.
- Rescue throws are backhand at chest height, never at the face.
- Anyone who leaves the area freezes at the boundary.
Variations
Easier
Two taggers and 6 discs, with a minimum rescue distance of 6 ft.
Standard
Three taggers, 4 discs, and rescues from 10 ft.
Harder
Frozen players must catch the disc with one hand to be freed.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a student using a wheelchair acts as a moving safe zone; anyone beside them cannot be tagged for 3 seconds.
- Hearing impairment: signal the end of each round by raising a pinnie instead of blowing the whistle.
- Lower fitness: the student may rest in a safe hoop for 10 seconds per round.
Learning goals
- Throw the disc accurately to a stationary teammate.
- Decide quickly between passing the disc and rescuing a frozen player.
- Value helping teammates as part of the group's success.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Soft flying discs: 4
- pinnies: 3
Teacher tip
The 5-second rule keeps the discs moving; count it out loud at first. If too many students are frozen, add another disc instead of stopping the game.
