Cooperative Roundnet Rally Record
A cooperative challenge on a round rebound net where two pairs take turns keeping a rally alive as long as possible, hitting the ball onto the net without catching it. Students work on striking with the hand, reading the bounce, and setting group goals.
How to play
- Six nets on the ground at least 6 m apart; groups of 4 in two pairs, standing one step from the net (2 min).
- Warm-up touches (3 min): each player drops the ball and hits it with an open hand onto the net so it bounces to a partner, who catches and repeats.
- Cooperative rally (4 min): each pair gets up to three touches between partners, and the last one goes onto the net; then the other pair plays. Count net hits without the ball dropping, with a goal set before each try.
- Two-minute challenges (6 min): two required touches per pair; each net hit by a different player in order; play while moving all the way around the net.
- Final record (3 min): three free tries, and each group reports its best score to the teacher to beat next time.
Rules
- Hit the ball, don't catch it, except during the warm-up touches.
- If the ball hits the rim or bounces twice, the count resets to zero.
- Safety: no stepping on or jumping over the net, and nets stay 6 m apart.
- Each group competes against its own record, not other groups.
Variations
Easier
One bounce on the ground is allowed between a pair's touches.
Standard
Three touches per pair and no ground bounces.
Harder
One touch per pair straight onto the net, alternating players.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: plays seated next to the net, and the partner can set the ball up close.
- Autism or shyness: same group all class, with challenges introduced one at a time.
- Advanced level: skilled groups play one-touch while others use three.
Learning goals
- Hit the net with just enough force to keep the rally going.
- Read the bounce and get into position on time.
- Set realistic group goals and adjust them.
Equipment for a class of 25
- roundnet sets: 6
- soft balls: 6
Teacher tip
Students tend to hit too hard: ask for soft hits so the rebound pops up high and gives time. Check net tension, because a loose net barely bounces the ball.
