Cooperative Kin-Ball Keep-Up
A cooperative giant-ball challenge in which the whole group tries to keep the ball in the air for as many hits as possible, with conditions that change every round. Students build cooperation, anticipation, and the habit of agreeing on a team strategy.
How to play
- Split the class into 2 groups of 12-13, each with a giant ball in a 15 x 15-yard space marked with cones.
- Round 1 (3 min): the group hits the ball upward with arms or hands and counts consecutive hits out loud before it drops.
- Round 2 (3 min): no one may hit twice in a row, and at least 8 different students must touch it before the count reaches 15.
- Round 3 (3 min): split the group into 4 teams; the ball must go through all four teams in order, calling the color before each hit.
- Between rounds, hold a 1-minute huddle to agree on a strategy (where everyone stands, who makes the call).
- Final round (3 min): each group tries to beat its record; if the ball drops, restart the count with no penalty.
Rules
- Hit with arms or open hands, never with a fist or foot.
- No one holds the ball: you may only hit it.
- Before each hit, call the name or color of the next player.
- Safety: don't backpedal to reach the ball and keep some space between you and teammates.
Variations
Easier
Allow one bounce on the floor every 5 hits.
Standard
Consecutive hits with no bounce, no repeat hitters, and calling the next player.
Harder
Each hit must use a different body part (arm, forearm, shoulder, head).
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: assign the student a fixed zone; the group must send the ball to them every 5 hits.
- Hearing impairment: pair the call with an agreed gesture, such as pointing.
- Lower fitness: let the student hit while seated or kneeling in a central zone.
Learning goals
- Cooperate to reach a shared group goal.
- Anticipate the giant ball's flight and get into position on time.
- Agree on and adjust strategies in short huddles.
Equipment for a class of 25
- giant ball: 2
- cones: 8
Teacher tip
In each huddle, ask what went wrong and let the group propose the fix. Post the records on the whiteboard to motivate them in future lessons.
