Colpbol Give-and-Shoot with a Goalie
A Colpbol drill in which students receive a hand-struck pass on the run and finish at the goal against a goalie. Students practice striking with an open hand, timing a moving ball, and goalie positioning.
How to play
- Make 4 groups of 6, each with a small goal, a 10-foot half circle of cones in front, and a starting cone 30 feet away (2 min).
- One student is the goalie, one is the passer (by a side cone 20 feet from the goal), and the rest line up at the start with one ball for every two.
- The first in line strikes the ball to the passer and runs toward the goal; the passer strikes it back in front of the runner, who finishes with the hand, first touch or after one bounce, from outside the crease.
- Goal = 1 point for the shooter; save = 1 point for the goalie. Then the shooter becomes passer, the passer becomes goalie, and the goalie goes to the line. Two 6-minute rounds.
- After each round, students add up goals and saves and talk about which shot worked best (2 min).
Rules
- The ball is struck only with the hand or arm; only the goalie may catch it, inside the crease.
- The shooter never steps into the crease.
- Nobody leaves the line until the player ahead has shot.
- Safety: shots stay below head height and never go at a goalie who is down.
Variations
Easier
No goalie: the passer calls which half of the goal to aim for, and a hit is worth 2 points.
Standard
Give-and-go on the run and a hand-struck shot against a goalie from outside 10 feet.
Harder
A defender leaves the goal when the shooter receives, creating a 2-on-1.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: shoots from a fixed spot, and the goalie plays on their knees.
- Visual impairment: use a bright ball, and the passer claps right before striking.
- Lower skill level: two bounces are allowed before the shot.
Learning goals
- Strike the ball with an open hand to pass and shoot.
- Time the run to meet a moving ball.
- Position as a goalie to cut down the shooting angle.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Colpbol balls: 12
- small goals: 4
- cones: 16
Teacher tip
Many students hit with a fist or stiff fingers: ask for a firm, flat "frying pan" hand. If a line gets long, add a second passer on the other side.
