Color-Coded Touch-Limit Futsal
A futsal game where every player wears a colored wristband that sets how many touches in a row they may take: unlimited, three, or two. Students practice quick decision-making, passing play, and equal chances across skill levels.
How to play
- Form four teams of 6 in pinnies and play 4v4 plus goalkeepers on two 30 x 20 yd courts (with 25 students, one student rotates in as scorekeeper).
- Hand out wristbands: green for unlimited touches, yellow for three max, red for two max. The toughest colors go to the most skilled ball handlers.
- If a player goes over their touches, the other team gets a kick-in from that spot.
- Every 6 minutes, pause for 1 minute while teams reassign the bands themselves: every player must try at least two colors.
- Play three 6-minute periods and finish with 2 minutes of discussion: Which color made you think before receiving the ball?
Rules
- The goalkeeper has unlimited touches but must release the ball within 4 seconds.
- A goal counts double when scored by a player wearing red.
- No slide tackles or charging: in futsal you win the ball on your feet.
Variations
Easier
Use only two colors: unlimited and three touches.
Standard
Three colors (unlimited, three, and two touches) reassigned each period.
Harder
Add a blue band for one-touch play for the most experienced players.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student wears green and nobody may tackle within 2 yards of them.
- Autism or attention challenges: remind the student of their color with a hand signal and keep the same band all class.
- Lower fitness: the student rotates more often with the scorekeeper or plays goalkeeper for one period.
Learning goals
- Decide before receiving what to do with the ball based on touches available.
- Offer close support to teammates who have fewer touches.
- Value rules that balance play between different skill levels.
Equipment for a class of 25
- futsal balls: 4
- pinnies (four colors): 24
- colored wristbands: 30
- goals: 4
Teacher tip
At first students lose count of touches, so have each player count quietly out loud. Watch for teammates moving close to the player in red, because that is what makes the game work.
