Coed Matched-Pair Soccer
A 5v5 coed game where every player is matched with an opponent of similar skill, wearing the same pinnie number, and only that opponent may tackle them. Students practice balanced participation, player-to-player defense, and respect for every skill level.
How to play
- Form coed teams of 5 with pinnies numbered 1 to 5, and match each player with an opponent of similar skill who wears the same number.
- Two 30 x 20 yd fields with two small goals at each end; play 5v5 with no goalkeepers. With 25 students, the fifth team referees and keeps score.
- Key rule: only your match may tackle you. Other opponents can cut off passes but cannot challenge you for the ball.
- Play four 5-minute periods; after each one, change the pairs or rotate the refereeing team.
- At the end, each pair of opponents shakes hands and names one good play the other made.
Rules
- If you take the ball from someone who is not your match, it goes back to the other team with a kick-in.
- A goal counts only if at least three attackers touched the ball.
- No pushing, charging, or tackling from behind.
- Do not argue about pairings during play; talk about it after the period.
Variations
Easier
Match pairs by color and let two defenders help out near their own goal.
Standard
Matched-pair defense by pinnie number, with goals counting after three different players touch the ball.
Harder
Three-touch limit, and a goal counts double if scored by someone who has not scored yet.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student is matched with an opponent who plays under the same limitation, such as walking.
- Shy students: they choose their match from two options the teacher suggests.
- Higher fitness: match the student with a peer at the same level and limit both to two touches.
Learning goals
- Take an active part in the game regardless of other players' skill levels.
- Play player-to-player defense by tracking one specific opponent.
- Respect teammates and opponents of different skill levels and genders.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soccer balls: 3
- numbered pinnies (five colors): 25
- small goals: 8
- cones: 16
Teacher tip
Prepare the pairings before class to save time and avoid awkward comments. This works especially well in classes where a few players tend to hog the ball.
