Coed Korfball 4v4 Two-Zone Game
A modified coed korfball game with two zones, one for offense and one for defense, where players switch zones after every two baskets. It builds equal participation, man-to-man defense without contact, and the rule against shooting while defended.
How to play
- Split a 30 x 15-yard court into two halves with cones and place a post in each half, a third of the way from the end line; form 6 coed teams of 4 (2 girls and 2 boys).
- Explain the modified rules (3 min): in each half, 2 attackers from one team face 2 defenders from the other, and no one may cross the center line.
- Each player guards only someone of the same gender; you may not shoot if a defender is within an arm's length, facing you with a hand up (defended shot).
- No dribbling or running with the ball; after each basket, restart from the center of the zone of the team that was scored on.
- After every two baskets in total, all four players on each team switch zones: attackers become defenders and vice versa.
- Play 7-minute games while two resting teams referee; rotate until everyone has played three games (about 25 min).
Rules
- No body contact, stripping the ball, or blocking with your body.
- Guard only a player of the same gender.
- No shooting when the shot is defended.
- Safety: no hanging on or leaning against the post, and keep space when rebounding.
Variations
Easier
Drop the defended-shot rule and use a low hoop.
Standard
4 on 4 in two zones with a switch every two baskets.
Harder
Play full-court 8 on 8 with a zone switch every two baskets.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student always plays in the offensive zone, guarded by a defender who may not raise a hand.
- Shy students: start as the team's referee and join in on the second rotation.
- Lower fitness: shorten each half to 12 yards long.
Learning goals
- Participate equally in a coed team sport.
- Apply man-to-man defense and the defended-shot rule.
- Switch quickly between offensive and defensive roles.
Equipment for a class of 25
- korfball posts: 2
- balls: 2
- pinnies: 12
- cones: 10
Teacher tip
Explain that the defended-shot rule forces players to get open, not force the shot. If teams can't be evenly split, adapt the guarding rule with agreed matchups.
