Class Record Challenge: Five Team Feats
Groups rotate through five measurable cooperative challenges, and their results are added into one class score that tries to beat the previous session's record. No one competes against anyone; the whole class works to improve its own mark.
How to play
- Set up 5 stations: circle passing without a drop in 1 minute, moving cones from one line to another 10 yards away in 1 minute, group chain broad jump, group plank adding up seconds, and a 4 x 20-yard relay (3 min).
- Make 5 groups of 5 and write the previous record for each station, or a benchmark, on the whiteboard (2 min).
- Each group spends 3 minutes per station: 1 minute to plan and practice and one official attempt recorded by another group. Rotate on the whistle (15 min).
- Add all groups' results for each station and compare them with the class record (2 min).
- Wrap-up: the class chooses which station to improve next session and which strategy to try (3 min).
Rules
- A group result only counts if everyone takes part.
- The group recording the score may not help or distract.
- Every improvement gets cheered, whichever group it comes from.
- Safety: land on mats in the chain jump, and stop the plank if form breaks down.
Variations
Easier
Replace the plank with a balance challenge and shorten the relay to 4 x 10 yards.
Standard
Five 3-minute stations with a class record as the benchmark.
Harder
Each group must predict its result beforehand and only scores if it matches or beats it.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: each station has an adapted version that also counts, such as seated passing or a wall plank.
- Hearing impairment: station changes are also shown with a visual signal.
- Lower fitness: the student contributes to the class total at their own pace, with no individual comparison.
Learning goals
- Set group goals and track progress.
- Cooperate in challenges that combine different fitness components.
- Value group improvement over comparing individuals.
Equipment for a class of 25
- foam balls: 2
- cones: 25
- mats: 4
- stopwatch: 5
- whiteboard: 1
Teacher tip
Keep the record sheet so you can repeat the activity every few weeks and students can see their progress. Choose stations where everyone can contribute, not just the strongest or fastest.
