Cheer Routine: Chants and Sharp Arm Motions
Groups of six create a no-stunt cheer routine: a rhythmic team chant, sharp, precise arm motions and changing formations. Students work on arm coordination, group timing and projecting their voice and energy.
How to play
- Teach six basic arm motions (high V, low V, T, hands on hips, diagonal and touchdown), hitting each sharply on 8 counts (5 min).
- Make groups of 6 with pom-poms: they practice linking the motions to the beat you clap (3 min).
- Each group writes a 4-line chant for the school team and gives each key word its own arm motion (6 min).
- They add 16 counts to music: two formation changes (line, V, two rows) and side steps with arm motions (6 min).
- Each group performs its chant and routine, and the class scores timing, energy and sharp arms from 1 to 3 (5 min).
Rules
- No stunts, lifts or jumps supported by teammates.
- Chants stay positive; never insult the other team.
- Every arm motion stops sharply: hit it and hold it.
- Keep an arm's length between teammates to avoid hitting each other.
Variations
Easier
Use just three arm motions and a 2-line chant with no formation changes.
Standard
Combine six motions, a 4-line chant and two formation changes with music.
Harder
Add a ripple of arm motions and a moving formation change without losing the count.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: place the student in the center of the formation to lead the chant and arm motions while seated.
- Hearing impairment: the group starts on a visual hand countdown.
- Shyness: the student can design the formations on paper and perform in the back row.
Learning goals
- Perform sharp arm motions in sync with the group.
- Create a rhythmic, positive team chant.
- Project energy and expression when performing for others.
Equipment for a class of 25
- pom-poms: 50
- music: 1
- speakers: 1
Teacher tip
Stress straight arms and hitting each motion hard, because that is what makes it look clean. If you are short on pom-poms, strips of colored paper or closed fists work fine.
