Chain Standing Broad Jump Team Challenge
Each team tries to cover as much distance as possible by chaining standing broad jumps: every jumper starts from where the previous one landed. Students work on standing jump technique, leg power, and cooperation.
How to play
- Make 5 teams of 5 and give each a piece of chalk. Mark a shared starting line with cones (2 minutes).
- Teach the technique: bend the knees, swing the arms back, drive them forward on takeoff, and land on both feet with soft knees. Each student gets 3 free practice jumps (4 minutes).
- Round 1: the first jumper goes from the line, the team chalks the back of the closest heel, and the next jumper starts from that mark until all five have gone (3 minutes).
- Measure each team's total distance with the tape measure and record it (2 minutes).
- Round 2: each team chooses its jump order and one technique cue to focus on, then repeats and compares with round 1 (5 minutes).
- Two-minute wrap-up: the team that improved most explains what changed.
Rules
- Take off and land on both feet at once; if a hand touches down behind, the mark goes at the hand.
- No steps or hops before the jump.
- Each team jumps in its own lane, at least 2 m from the next.
- Jump only on dry ground with no loose gravel.
Variations
Easier
Allow a few repeated arm swings before the jump.
Standard
A two-foot standing jump with the mark at the back heel.
Harder
Each jumper does two linked standing jumps with no pause between them.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: perform their own movement (a wheelchair push or a long step) that adds to the team chain.
- Visual impairment: a partner orients them with a hand on the shoulders and marks the line with a pole on the ground.
- Lower fitness: their jump counts double so the whole team values their contribution.
Learning goals
- Coordinate arms and legs in a standing broad jump.
- Absorb the landing by bending the knees.
- Work together to improve a shared result.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 10
- chalk: 5
- tape measure: 2
Teacher tip
Watch for knees caving in on landing and correct it early. On hard surfaces, limit the number of jumps per student to protect joints.
