Catch-and-Hit Indiaca over the Rope
A 2-on-2 indiaca game over a rope where the first contact may be a catch and the second must be a hit into the other court. It is a stepping stone between throwing and striking that lets young players have long rallies from day one.
How to play
- String the long rope at about 5 ft and use cones to mark 13 x 13 ft courts on each side. Form pairs and match two pairs on each court.
- Explain the sequence: the first player to receive may catch the indiaca; from that spot they toss it gently to their partner, who must hit it with an open palm into the other court.
- Serve: serve with an underhand hit from the back of the court. Pairs alternate serves.
- Scoring: win a point if the indiaca lands in the other court, if the opponents send it out, or if they hit with a fist. Games go to 7 points or 4 minutes.
- Halfway through each game, blow the whistle and partners switch catcher and hitter roles.
- Rotation: after each game, winning pairs move one court to the right and the others one court to the left (3 games).
Rules
- Only one catch per side, and the catcher may not walk with the indiaca.
- The hit into the other court is always made with an open palm.
- Do not touch the rope or reach into the other court.
- Call "Mine!" before going for the indiaca so you do not run into your partner.
Variations
Easier
Both contacts may be catches, and players throw it into the other court.
Standard
First contact is a catch, second contact is a hit into the other court.
Harder
No catches: both contacts must be palm hits.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: use a 10 x 10 ft court and a rope at 4 ft; a student using a wheelchair may catch on every contact.
- Visual impairment: use a brightly colored indiaca and shrink the court so the flight is short.
- Advanced students: the final hit must land in the back half of the court to score double.
Learning goals
- Catch the indiaca while turning toward a partner.
- Decide which area of the opposing court to target.
- Follow the contact rule and accept the result.
Equipment for a class of 25
- indiacas: 7
- long rope: 2
- cones: 28
Teacher tip
At first many students throw the indiaca over instead of hitting it; pause the game briefly and model the difference. The catch buys thinking time, so ask them to look for the open space before they hit.
