Beach Volleyball Sand Footwork and Sprawl Digs
Beach-specific volleyball work: first sand footwork (short steps and crossover steps), then a controlled side sprawl to dig a low ball. Students practice moving on soft surfaces, falling safely, and digging with the forearms.
How to play
- Use sand or, if you have none, mats on the gym floor. Explain that on sand you take shorter steps and push off the balls of your feet (2 min).
- Footwork circuit (5 min): in pairs, move around a square of 4 cones 13 feet apart with shuffles, crossover steps, and backpedaling while your partner watches.
- Fall progression (4 min): from kneeling, then crouching, and finally standing, fall to the side landing on the thigh, hip, and side with arms together.
- Dig with a ball (5 min): the partner tosses 6 feet to one side and the defender takes two steps, sprawls to the side, and digs the ball up.
- Switch roles every 6 balls. Final challenge (2 min): count how many digs reach the tosser's head height.
Rules
- On a hard floor, sprawls only happen on mats.
- Check and clear the sand of any dangerous objects before starting.
- Always fall to the side, never onto the knees or face-first onto the elbows.
Variations
Easier
Footwork only, plus a sprawl from kneeling on a ball tossed very close.
Standard
Footwork, standing side sprawl, and a forearm dig on a tossed ball.
Harder
The partner hits instead of tossing and switches sides without warning.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: work only on supported footwork or be the tosser from a chair.
- Hearing impairment: the tosser points with the free arm to show the side.
- Lower fitness: shrink the square to 10 feet and rest at every role change.
Learning goals
- Move efficiently on soft surfaces.
- Sprawl safely to the side to dig low balls.
- Dig the ball with the forearms after moving.
Equipment for a class of 25
- volleyballs: 13
- cones: 24
- mats: 12
Teacher tip
Do not move to the standing sprawl until everyone controls it from kneeling. On sand, make sure there is water and shade, and that nobody goes barefoot if the sand is too hot.
