Beach Handball: Shoot-Out Tiebreaker
Students practice the beach handball shoot-out: the goalkeeper passes to an attacker running from the halfway line, who catches on the move and has a few seconds to shoot while the opposing goalkeeper comes out. Teams set their own shooting order and referee it themselves.
How to play
- Explain the shoot-out: the attacker leaves their line, receives a pass from their goalkeeper on the run and shoots before the opposing goalkeeper intercepts (4 min).
- Rehearsal without an opposing goalkeeper: pass on the run and shot within five seconds, using a lob pass (4 min).
- Each team of six decides its order of five shooters and writes it on the sheet (2 min).
- Shoot-out rounds between teams; one student from each team referees and another counts the five seconds (8 min).
- Debrief: which order strategy worked and how nerves were handled (2 min).
Rules
- The goalkeeper coming out may not collide with the attacker and must slow down if they arrive together.
- If five seconds pass without a shot, the attempt doesn't count.
- Shooters wait behind their line until they hear the signal.
- Student referees' calls are respected and discussed at the end.
Variations
Easier
No time limit and the opposing goalkeeper stays on the goal line.
Standard
Shoot-out with a goalkeeper coming out and a five-second limit.
Harder
A goal only counts if it is a spin or in-flight shot, as in the official two-point format.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: shoots from 6 m with the opposing goalkeeper standing still, and the goal counts the same.
- Hearing impairment: the start signal is a waved scarf and the five-count is shown on fingers.
- Performance anxiety: chooses to shoot first or to referee.
Learning goals
- Shoot accurately under time pressure.
- Plan team strategies and take on refereeing roles.
- Handle emotional pressure and accept the result with good sportsmanship.

Teacher tip
Run the shoot-out on the softest area available and ask goalkeepers to come out braking. It is a great way to close a beach handball session.
