Beach Handball on Sand: Spin Shots and Two-Point Goals
4v4 beach handball games in the sand pit or a soft area of the schoolyard, where spectacular goals (360-degree spin or in-flight) and the specialist's goals count for two points. Each skill is practiced separately first, then played with the beach handball rules.
How to play
- Explain beach handball scoring: a regular goal is one point; a spin, in-flight or specialist goal is two points; games are played in sets (4 min).
- Mark two 15 x 12 m (50 x 40 ft) courts with ropes or cones and 6 m goal areas (2 min).
- Practice the spin in the air with a self-pass and landing in the sand, without a goalkeeper (6 min).
- Practice the in-flight goal: a partner lobs the ball into the area and the attacker jumps, catches and shoots in the air (6 min).
- 4v4 games (goalkeeper plus three players) in 5-minute sets with a golden goal to break ties (10 min).
- Quick debrief: which two-point goals were worth trying and which were too risky (2 min).
Rules
- Play barefoot only if the sand has been checked first; otherwise wear sneakers.
- Nobody dives into the sand with a teammate underneath or within 6 feet.
- Defenders may not touch a player in the air.
- Free substitutions through the substitution zone; nobody enters until the teammate has left.
Variations
Easier
All goals count one point and the spin is optional.
Standard
4v4 with two-point goals for spins, in-flight goals or specialist goals.
Harder
Only two-point goals count in the last minute of each set.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: plays on firm ground beside the sand as a fixed sideline passer, and their goal counts double.
- Ankle injury: referees and records special goals without stepping on the sand.
- Autism: has a fixed goalkeeper role with a clear throw-out routine.
Learning goals
- Perform creative aerial skills with safe landings.
- Apply the specific rules of beach handball.
- Weigh the risk and reward of more difficult actions.

Teacher tip
