Balanced Breakfast Builder Scavenger Hunt
Teams get an order, such as breakfast for an athlete or for someone with a milk allergy, and build it by collecting food cards around the blacktop after completing fitness tasks. Students learn to combine food groups.
How to play
- Spread 60 food cards under cones around the area. Each cone has a fitness task: 10 squats, 20 jump rope hops without a rope, 10 lunges.
- Briefing (3 min): a balanced breakfast includes dairy or an alternative, a grain (ideally whole grain), and fruit, and may add protein or a healthy fat.
- Teams of 4 get a hoop as their 'table' and an order card: early-morning practice, milk allergy, only 5 minutes to eat, or vegetarian.
- Members take turns: pick a cone, do the task, look at the card, and decide whether to take it. Only one card per trip.
- Cards may be returned and swapped. After 10 minutes, each team presents its breakfast and the teacher scores balance and fit with the order.
- Second round (5 min) with orders swapped between teams.
Rules
- Finish the cone's task before looking at the card.
- Run with your eyes up and don't cut between cones that are close together.
- Unused cards go back under a cone, not on the ground.
Variations
Easier
Cards are colored by food group.
Standard
Cards show only a picture and a name.
Harder
Each card has a price, and the breakfast must also fit a budget.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: be the chef who decides the menu while teammates search, or use accessible cones with upper-body tasks.
- Autism or reading difficulties: cards with clear pictures.
- Fitness level: each cone offers two task levels to choose from.
Learning goals
- Combine food groups to build a balanced breakfast.
- Adapt food choices to specific needs.
- Stay moderately active throughout the task.
Equipment for a class of 25
- food cards: 60
- cones: 30
- hoops: 6
Teacher tip
Include real allergies and intolerances naturally and avoid any comments about weight. Pastries and boxed juice often sneak in; discuss it without guilt.
