Back-Court Shooting Wheel
A continuous drill where three back-court lines (left back, center, and right back) pass the ball, and the player who catches on the run takes a set shot from 9 meters. Students practice catching on the move, a quick arm load, and rotating through lines.
How to play
- At each goal, three lines at 12 meters in the left back, center, and right back spots, with a goalie who switches every 3 minutes. Balls start with the center line.
- The center steps up and passes to the left back, who drives toward the goal, catches on the run, and takes a set shot from 9 meters.
- The center goes to the back of the line they passed to, and the shooter grabs their ball and joins the center line.
- For the first 10 minutes, the center alternates passes left and right; for the last 5, the center picks the side based on which back breaks first.
- Each goal counts its goals per block and tries to beat its score in the next one.
Rules
- Shoot within three steps of the catch with no dribbling.
- The next play does not start until the shooter has released the ball.
- Safety: retrieve balls only when no one is shooting, and go around the side of the goal.
Variations
Easier
The back catches from a standstill and shoots from 8 meters.
Standard
Catch on the run and take a set shot from 9 meters.
Harder
Add a passive defender at 9 meters that the shooter must fake before shooting.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student is the permanent center passer and controls the pace.
- Hearing impairment: the center raises an arm before passing to cue the back.
- Fitness level: each student chooses how fast to arrive at the catch.
Learning goals
- Catch on the run and load the arm without losing rhythm.
- Take an accurate set shot from 9 meters.
- Keep the rotation going independently.
Equipment for a class of 25
- team handballs: 12
- cones: 6
- goals: 2
Teacher tip
The most common mistake is stopping to catch; have the back start running before the pass leaves. Space the lines out enough that no shot crosses anyone.
