All-at-Once Toss: Zero Drops
In circles of six, everyone tosses a beanbag to a teammate at the same moment and must catch the one coming in without any drops. Students work on hand-eye coordination, a shared rhythm and adjusting their toss to help the receiver.
How to play
- Make 4 circles of 6 (one of 7) with about 8 feet between students, and give everyone a beanbag (1 min).
- Level 1: on "One, two, three, toss!" everyone tosses underhand to the person on the right and catches the one from the left. Count rounds in a row with no drops (3 min).
- Level 2: toss to the left, then to the person two spots away (3 min).
- Level 3: the circle walks in one direction while tossing, or everyone uses the non-dominant hand (3 min).
- Final challenge: each group picks a level and goes for its record in 2 minutes, then shares it with the class (3 min).
- Wrap-up: what adjustments helped the shared count work (2 min).
Rules
- Everyone tosses together on the same count.
- If a beanbag drops, the group's count goes back to zero.
- Always toss underhand to the receiver's chest height.
- Safety: no hard throws and nothing aimed at the face.
Variations
Easier
Use scarves or large foam balls and shorten the distance to 5 feet.
Standard
Beanbags at 8 feet with changes in direction and target.
Harder
Each student tosses two beanbags, one to each side, on the same count.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student sits in the circle and teammates adjust the height of their tosses.
- Visual impairment: use bell balls or brightly colored balls at a shorter distance.
- Coordination difficulties: the student may catch only, without tossing, in early rounds.
Learning goals
- Improve coordination when tossing and catching at the same time.
- Adjust toss strength to the receiver's ability.
- Synchronize the group with a shared rhythm.
Equipment for a class of 25
- beanbags: 25
- stopwatch: 1
Teacher tip
The most common mistake is tossing hard and high; ask for soft arcs that arrive at chest height. Mix ability levels in each circle so success depends on everyone.
