4-on-4 Games with Student Stat Keepers
Half-court 4-on-4 games in which the team on the bench keeps stats on a team that is playing: assists, rebounds, steals, and shots. At the end, each team looks at its numbers and picks one improvement goal for the next game.
How to play
- Six teams of 4 plus one timer. Two games at once in the half courts and two teams on the bench, each with a stat sheet and pencils, watching one team (3 min).
- The sheet: shots taken and made, rebounds, steals, turnovers, and assists. Each stat keeper tracks only one category (2 min).
- Five-minute games with man-to-man defense and no free throws: fouls are taken out of bounds and baskets count 1 or 2 by distance (10 min over two rounds).
- After each game, stat keepers hand over the sheet and the team gets 1 minute to set a specific goal, such as fewer than 3 turnovers.
- Bench teams play and playing teams move to the bench. Two more rounds, then check whether each team met its goal (10 min).
Rules
- The player who is fouled calls it, and calls are respected without arguing; the ball goes out of bounds.
- Stat keepers record objectively and don't cheer or criticize from the bench.
- Safety: the bench sits more than 2 yards off the sideline so no one gets hit by a ball or a player.
Variations
Easier
A sheet with only two stats, baskets and turnovers, and 3-on-3 games.
Standard
A five-stat sheet split among four stat keepers and 5-minute games.
Harder
Calculate shooting percentage, and each team picks a specific tactic to fix its weak spot.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility: serve as head stat keeper or timer and present the numbers to the team.
- Students with autism: use a sheet with icons and only one stat to record per game.
- Students with lower fitness play shorter games and may sub freely from the bench.
Learning goals
- Observe and record game data objectively.
- Analyze their own stats to set improvement goals.
- Apply man-to-man defense in games with modified rules.

Teacher tip
Seat each stat keeper in a fixed spot on the bench with their category to avoid mix-ups. Stress that stats are for improving, not for calling anyone out; no numbers are read aloud with names attached.
