3v2 Attack with a 2v1 Return Wave
Continuous 3v2 attacks toward a goal with a goalkeeper; when the play ends, the two defenders counter 2v1 toward two small goals. Students practice using a numbers advantage, making decisions, and transitioning from defense to offense.
How to play
- Two 30 x 20 yd fields, each with a goal and goalkeeper at one end and two small goals at the other. On each field, a line of attackers waits at midfield and a line of defenders next to the goal.
- Three attackers head for the goalkeeper and two defenders step out to stop them (3v2). The play lasts no more than 15 seconds.
- When it ends (goal, save, out of bounds, or steal), the goalkeeper gives a new ball to the two defenders, who counter toward the small goals against the attacker who touched it last (2v1).
- Then attackers join the defender line and defenders join the attacker line; the goalkeeper changes every 4 minutes.
- Play for 16 minutes keeping score by role, then take 2 minutes to discuss: When should you dribble, and when should you pass?
Rules
- If a teammate is open, pass or shoot before the 6-yard line.
- Goals in the small goals only count from the attacking half.
- No slide tackles or charging from behind; the next wave goes only on the teacher's signal.
Variations
Easier
Play 3v1 going forward and 2v0 coming back to guarantee success.
Standard
3v2 attack against a goalkeeper and a 2v1 counter to two small goals, rotating roles.
Harder
The attack lasts no more than 8 seconds, and a second defender joins the counter 2 seconds late.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student plays goalkeeper or serves the counterattack ball and decides who gets it.
- Autism: draw the line rotation on the whiteboard and keep the same starting spot every time.
- Lower fitness: the student goes only in the forward wave and rests one round.
Learning goals
- Use the numbers advantage by drawing in a defender before passing.
- Switch quickly from defense to offense when a play ends.
- Choose between dribbling, passing, or shooting based on where defenders are.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soccer balls: 10
- small goals: 4
- goals: 2
- cones: 16
Teacher tip
If all three attackers drift to the middle, the advantage disappears, so ask one to stay wide on each side. Keep the waiting area well apart so nobody crosses in front of a shot.
