2v2 Soccer Defending: Pressure and Cover
2v2 situations in lanes where the closest defender pressures the ball and the partner covers at an angle behind, switching roles with every pass. Students practice basic team defense, communication, and decision-making.
How to play
- Mark 20 x 12 yd lanes with an end line at each end. Groups of 4 per lane (with 25 students, one rotates in as judge).
- Step 1 (4 min): shadow defending. Attackers pass slowly while defenders adjust: the closest one steps up to pressure and the other sets up at an angle 3 yards behind.
- Step 2 (8 min): live 2v2. Attackers score a point by dribbling over the end line; defenders score by winning the ball and dribbling over the opposite line.
- Switch attack and defense roles every 2 minutes.
- Wrap-up (3 min): Which words do you use to call who pressures and who covers?
Rules
- The pressuring defender does not tackle until balanced and about an arm's length from the attacker.
- Defend on your feet, with no slide tackles or pushing.
- Each defensive pair uses short calls to talk, such as ball and cover.
Variations
Easier
Attackers may only dribble at walking pace during shadow defending, and the lane is narrower.
Standard
Shadow defending and live 2v2 with pressure, cover, and role switches on every pass.
Harder
Play 3v2, and the defending pair must hold for 10 seconds without anyone crossing the line.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student serves as judge and gives the calls to the defending pair.
- Hearing impairment: the pair uses hand signals instead of words.
- Lower skill level: the student starts with shadow defending while a classmate points to where they should stand.
Learning goals
- Pressure the ball carrier with a good defensive stance.
- Cover a teammate by setting up at an angle behind them.
- Communicate with your partner to switch roles.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soccer balls: 6
- cones: 24
- pinnies (two colors): 12
Teacher tip
The most common mistake is both defenders going to the ball and leaving the other attacker open, so freeze the play and reposition the pair. Praise communication as much as steals.
