2-on-2 Sitting Volleyball on a Badminton Court
Sitting volleyball games in pairs on badminton half courts with a rope 3 feet high as the net, with opponents rotating every few minutes. Students cooperate on a small court, anticipate the ball, and include every classmate on equal footing.
How to play
- Use the lines of a badminton court and pair up the class; a rope 3 feet high serves as the net. Set up two or three courts depending on space (3 min).
- Serve from the back line, seated, with a bump or a set. Each pair gets up to three touches, and no player may touch the ball twice in a row.
- Score a point if the ball lands in the other court or the opponents commit a fault, such as lifting their bottom off the floor on contact.
- Games last 4 minutes; on the whistle, winning pairs rotate one court to the right (4 rounds, 16 min).
- Wrap-up (1 min): each pair shares one strategy that worked, like aiming for the gap between opponents.
Rules
- Your bottom must touch the floor when you contact the ball.
- You may block the serve while seated, but never touch the rope.
- Leave at least a 6-foot lane between courts to prevent collisions.
Variations
Easier
Allow a catch and throw on the second touch, plus one bounce per side.
Standard
Seated 2-on-2 with up to three touches and a rotation every 4 minutes.
Harder
Three touches required per pair, and serves must be sets from the back line.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: full participation; if needed, a slightly shorter court on their side.
- Autism or shyness: keep the same partner for the whole activity and give a warning before each rotation.
- Advanced students: the last touch must always be an attack.
Learning goals
- Cooperate with a partner to cover a small court.
- Anticipate the ball's path from a seated position.
- Take part in an adapted sport on equal terms.
Equipment for a class of 25
- volleyballs: 6
- long rope: 3
- cones: 12
Teacher tip
A badminton court is the perfect size for pairs to cover everything. If one pair dominates, give them a three-touch requirement.
