You Run, I Rep: Partner Relay Training
In pairs, while one student runs a short lap, the other racks up reps of a strength exercise; when the runner gets back, they switch roles. The pair adds up reps toward a shared goal, so each depends on the other's effort and steady pace.
How to play
- Mark a 100-meter loop with cones and a mat area at the start. Explain the system and the four blocks: squats, push-ups, V-ups and lunges (3 min).
- Each pair sets a total rep goal for each block based on a 30-second trial (2 min).
- 4-minute blocks: A runs the lap while B does reps; when A arrives they high-five and switch. Reps are recorded at the end of each block, with 1 minute of rest between blocks (19 min).
- Each pair compares reps with their goal and discusses who held their running pace better (1 min).
Rules
- The switch happens only with a high-five in the start area, never earlier.
- The working partner counts reps out loud, and the runner doesn't pressure them on return.
- The loop runs one way only to prevent collisions between runners.
- If partners have very different levels, the faster one can run a longer loop marked with another cone.
Variations
Easier
60-meter loop and 3-minute blocks.
Standard
Four 4-minute blocks with a 100-meter loop and a pair goal.
Harder
Add a fifth block carrying a medicine ball on the lap and cut rests to 30 seconds.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: does the lap in the wheelchair on a flat route and reps with upper-body exercises.
- Blind or low vision: runs with a guide along a marked lane or replaces the run with marching in place while counting steps.
- Asthma: runs the loop at an easy jog or brisk walk, with the inhaler near the start.
Learning goals
- Combine endurance and strength in an organized single session.
- Cooperate with a partner to reach a shared goal.
- Keep a steady work pace knowing the partner depends on it.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 10
- log sheets: 15
- timer: 1
- mats: 15
Teacher tip
It is a great format for working out with friends outside school, so mention that at the end. Make sure the run doesn't turn into a sprint that leaves students too winded for their reps.
