Yarn Trail: Follow It and Remember
A strand of yarn tied at waist height winds around the playground between trees, posts and fences, with picture cards hanging from it. In groups, students follow it without letting go, look at the cards and rebuild their order at the end. It builds attention and trail following.
How to play
- Before class, tie about 90 yards of yarn between posts and trees at waist height, with turns and a pass under a bench.
- Clip on 8 cards with simple pictures (a sun, a ball, a dog…) several yards apart.
- Groups of 4 start a minute apart: the leader keeps a hand on the yarn and the others follow in a line, hand on the shoulder in front.
- They walk or jog lightly along the yarn and stop 5 seconds at each card to look without touching it.
- At the finish, each group gets a shuffled matching set and has 2 minutes to put the cards in trail order.
- Check by walking the trail together. Repeat with the cards moved and a new leader.
Rules
- The leader's hand never leaves the yarn.
- No pushing: if the line stops, everyone stops.
- Look at the cards, never take them down.
- Start only when the group ahead has passed the third card.
Variations
Easier
Only 5 cards, named out loud as the group passes.
Standard
Eight cards along about 90 yards, with the order rebuilt at the finish.
Harder
Besides the order, groups must say which playground feature each card was next to.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: run the yarn only across flat ground, with no low passes, at a height reachable from a wheelchair.
- Visual impairment: this activity works very well; replace the cards with textured objects.
- Shyness or fitness level: the student can walk in the middle of the line, without leading, and switch spots when ready.
Learning goals
- Follow a marked trail while keeping contact with the guide line.
- Observe and remember a sequence of items along a route.
- Match their walking pace to the group's.
Equipment for a class of 25
- ball of yarn: 2
- cards: 64
- clothespins: 8
Teacher tip
Check the knots and make sure the yarn never crosses walkways or sits at neck height. Remind students the winners are those who remember, not those who finish first.
