Wrestling Around the World: Traditional Grip Stations
A four-station circuit where students try the grip and stance of traditional wrestling styles from different countries, always without throws. They compare how each culture solved the same challenge: unbalancing the other person.
How to play
- Introduce the stations with cards: glima (Iceland, belts and upright stance), ssireum (Korea, band around waist and thigh), schwingen (Switzerland, canvas shorts over clothing) and kurash (Uzbekistan, grips above the belt) (3 min).
- Stations 1 and 2: at each, pairs copy the card's grip and have 20-second push and off-balance duels with no takedowns (12 min).
- Stations 3 and 4: same format with each card's grip (12 min).
- Debrief: what these styles share with Canarian or Leonese wrestling, and what stereotypes exist about who wrestles (3 min).
Rules
- No throws or trips at any station.
- You win a duel by making the partner put a hand down or step out of the zone.
- Grip only where the card says.
- Change partners at each station.
Variations
Easier
Grip and cooperative off-balancing only.
Standard
20-second duels with each culture's grip.
Harder
Each pair invents a new rule inspired by one style and tests it.
Adaptations
- Blind or low-vision students: the teacher guides their hands to each card's grip before starting.
- Upper-limb injury: judge and card reader at two stations.
- Students who don't want contact: try the grip with a partner without opposition and comment on the differences.
Learning goals
- Learn about traditional wrestling styles from other cultures.
- Adapt grip and stance to different rules.
- Reflect on stereotypes in combat sports.
Equipment for a class of 25
- judo belts: 30
- towels: 10
- mats: 12
- station cards: 4
Teacher tip
Cards should show a drawing of the grip and one line of history; leave out details you can't verify. For ssireum, a towel tied around waist and thigh works as the band. Wrap up by pointing out that many of these styles now have women's competitions.
