Wordless Encounters: Platform, Bus Stop, and Waiting Room
In pairs, students act out silent encounters in public places with a secret relationship: two friends who haven't seen each other in years, two strangers sharing an umbrella, someone waiting for a person who never shows. It works on subtle nonverbal language: gaze, distance, rhythm, and posture.
How to play
- The whole class waits together on an imaginary train platform and tries out states: boredom, hurry, nerves, cold. Only posture and gaze (4 min).
- In pairs, each person draws a relationship card and keeps it hidden. They improvise a 40-second silent encounter at a bus stop (6 min).
- Repeat the encounter in another place (waiting room, elevator, park bench) with the same relationship. The pair looks for three key moments: first glance, approach, and goodbye (8 min).
- Pairs of pairs: each shows its encounter to the other, who guesses the relationship (5 min).
- Debrief: which small detail said more than a big gesture (2 min).
Rules
- No physical contact in the scenes.
- Relationships come from the cards: no romantic-couple scenes that make people uncomfortable.
- The audience stays silent too.
- Anyone can ask for another card if they don't like theirs.
Variations
Easier
Very clear relationships (friends reuniting, two people who are angry) and one location.
Standard
Varied relationships in two locations.
Harder
Mid-scene, the teacher gives a signal and the relationship changes (a secret comes out) without words.
Adaptations
- Hearing impairment: no change to the scene needed; give instructions in writing.
- Visual impairment: build the encounter with nonverbal sounds (footsteps, sighs, coughs) and distance guided by the partner's voice.
- Limited mobility: set locations with seated or waiting characters, no change to the scene.
Learning goals
- Communicate relationships through gaze, distance, and rhythm.
- Read other people's nonverbal language.
- Practice listening and reacting with a partner.
Equipment for a class of 25
- relationship cards: 15
- chairs: 10
Teacher tip
Prepare cards without sensitive topics: friends reuniting, neighbors who dislike each other, a teacher and a former student, fans of rival teams. Set chairs in rows of three to create platforms and waiting rooms quickly.
