Wink Murder on the Move
While the group walks around the space, a secret killer knocks people out with a wink and a detective tries to catch them. The game builds eye contact, observation, exaggerated dramatic deaths, and honest play by the rules.
How to play
- Make two groups of 12-13 playing at the same time in two halves of the gym. Deal one card per student: a face card is the killer, an ace is the detective, the rest are numbers.
- The detective reveals themselves and stands in the middle of the zone. Everyone else walks slowly, making eye contact with everyone.
- The killer strikes by sneakily winking. A winked-at player silently counts to three, "dies" slowly and dramatically, and sits at the edge to watch.
- The detective gets three guesses. A correct guess wins; if the killer takes out five players first, the killer wins. Rounds last about 3 minutes.
- Shuffle and play about four rounds per group so everyone gets a turn as detective or killer.
Rules
- You must look people in the eye as you pass; no walking with your head down.
- Knocked-out players can't reveal who winked at them.
- Safety: falls are slow, knees first and then side, never backward or sudden.
Variations
Easier
Play seated in a circle so eye contact is easier to manage.
Standard
Walking around the space with one killer and one detective per group.
Harder
Two killers in the same group who can also take each other out, and the detective gets only two guesses.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student plays from a fixed spot and others walk past; their dramatic death uses only the torso and arms.
- Visual impairment: replace the wink with a light tap on the shoulder when passing, and the whole group plays that way.
- Autism or shyness: if holding eye contact is uncomfortable, the student can look at a partner's forehead or nose, which counts the same.
Learning goals
- Hold intentional eye contact throughout the game.
- Show an exaggerated dramatic reaction with body control.
- Follow the rules honestly even when nobody can see you cheat.
Equipment for a class of 25
- deck of playing cards: 2
Teacher tip
Rehearse the safe dramatic fall with the whole class first; if the deaths get rough, stop and practice them again in slow motion.
