Wing Shots from Tight Angles
The wing catches on the run along the sideline and jumps inward to open up the angle before shooting, landing outside the goal area. Students work on taking off toward the middle, catching on the move, and choosing near post or far post.
How to play
- At each goal, two lines start on each wing by the end line, with a passer at 9 meters. A hoop on the floor near the 6-meter line marks the takeoff spot.
- Phase 1 (4 minutes): the wing cuts toward the middle, catches from the passer, takes off from the hoop jumping inward, and shoots on an empty goal, focusing on the angle.
- Phase 2 (5 minutes): add a goalie. Put a cone inside the goal at each post; far-post goal 2 points, near-post goal 1.
- After shooting, the wing becomes the passer and the passer joins the opposite wing line. Alternate sides to practice both angles.
- Last 6 minutes: left line versus right line, every shot tracked, with a new goalie every 2 minutes.
Rules
- Take off outside the goal area; stepping on the line before the jump cancels the goal.
- Shoot in the air, never landing inside the area before the release.
- Safety: the goalie does not charge at a shooter in the air, and no one crosses the jumper's path.
Variations
Easier
Shoot from a standstill on the wing, with the hoop set farther from the line.
Standard
Catch on the run, jump inward, and shoot against a goalie.
Harder
A passive defender closes the wing and forces a wider jump.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student shoots from a standstill on the wing, aiming near or far post.
- Visual impairment: the goalie or a partner taps the target post to give an audio cue.
- Fitness level: shooters choose how far out they start their run.
Learning goals
- Take off toward the middle to gain shooting angle.
- Catch on the run from a back-court pass.
- Choose the right post based on the goalie's position.

Teacher tip
The typical mistake is jumping straight at the goal without gaining angle; point out that the hoop is placed inward for a reason. Shots are close to the goalie, so stress the no-head-shots rule.
