Whole-Class Bucket Toss Record
A whole-class target challenge: everyone tosses beanbags into a center bucket from different distances, adding to one shared score the class tries to beat on each attempt. It builds accuracy, goal setting, and cooperation.
How to play
- Put a bucket in the middle and use cones to mark 5 spokes, each with three lines at 6, 10, and 13 feet from the bucket (1, 2, and 3 points). Make 5 groups of 5, one lined up behind each spoke (2 min).
- Each student has one beanbag and chooses which line to toss from. On the signal, the first student in each line steps up, and all 5 toss underhand at the bucket together.
- When every line has tossed, two helpers count the beanbags in the bucket and their value, and you chalk the class total on the floor.
- Before each new attempt, the class takes 1 min to set a goal and a strategy, such as who tosses from far away or how to toss higher. Make 3 attempts (9 min).
- Wrap-up (2 min): compare the best attempt with the first and talk about which strategy helped most.
Rules
- Nobody goes to the middle until the collect whistle.
- Always toss underhand and only at the bucket.
- Helpers who collect change on every attempt.
Variations
Easier
Use two buckets side by side or a hoop around the bucket worth 1 point.
Standard
One bucket, three distances with different values, and three goal-setting attempts.
Harder
Beanbags that hit the rim and bounce out subtract one point from the total.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student tosses from the chair at the closest line, and their points count the same as from the far line.
- Hearing impairment: start each toss by dropping a raised arm that all 5 spokes can see.
- Skill level: the most accurate students can help a classmate set their feet before tossing.
Learning goals
- Toss underhand accurately at a raised target.
- Set a shared goal and look for strategies to reach it.
- Value each classmate's contribution to the group result.
Equipment for a class of 25
- buckets: 1
- beanbags: 25
- cones: 15
- chalk: 2
Teacher tip
Stress that every point goes to the same score, without comparing anyone. A low, wide bucket works best for the youngest grades.
