Wheelbarrow Walk Progressions
A technical partner wheelbarrow progression in which the hold moves farther from the hips (thighs, knees, ankles) to make the arms and core work harder. Students build bodyweight strength and work responsibly with the partner holding them.
How to play
- Pairs of similar size each get a 25 ft lane marked with cones and a mat at the start. Teach the hold: the holder grips the thighs, close to the hips (2 min).
- Station 1, hold (2 min): on the mat, a 10-second static wheelbarrow with a thigh grip and a straight body; switch roles after each try.
- Station 2, walk (3 min): walk 15 ft with a thigh grip; if the body stays straight, the next try uses a knee grip.
- Station 3, slalom (3 min): weave around three cones 6 ft apart; the student on their hands sets the pace and the holder follows.
- Station 4, challenge (3 min): walk to the last cone, do 2 wheelbarrow push-ups, and come back. Stronger students may move to an ankle grip.
- Wrap-up (2 min): each pair shares which grip they reached and where they felt it most.
Rules
- The holder never pushes: they follow the pace of the partner's hands.
- The walker says 'stop,' and the holder gently lowers the legs to the floor.
- Safety: straight body with no sagging low back; if it sags, go back to a grip closer to the hips.
Variations
Easier
Static holds and short 10 ft walks with a hip grip.
Standard
Four stations with grips progressing from thighs to knees.
Harder
Ankle grip and a slalom with 2 push-ups at each cone.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: wall or bench push-ups, walking the hands sideways along the bench.
- Autism or shyness: a fixed, chosen partner with the four stations shown on a picture poster.
- Lower strength: stay with a hip grip and do station 1 with knees down on the mat.
Learning goals
- Keep the trunk aligned while the arms support body weight.
- Adjust difficulty by changing the grip point.
- Work safely with a partner by respecting their pace and signals.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 40
- mats: 13

This is a strength activity, not a race, so don't allow timing.
