What My Body Can Do: A Function-First Circuit
A six-station circuit of abilities (balance, strength, coordination, endurance, flexibility and rhythm) where each student picks a level and writes down what their body let them do, never how it looks. It builds a body image based on function rather than appearance or comparison.
How to play
- Introduce the idea: today there are no times, scores or rankings; we only record what the body can do. Each student gets a card with six blanks (3 min).
- Rotate through six stations of 2.5 minutes: balancing on a line, pushing a medicine ball or the wall, jump rope, easy jogging, mobility on a yoga mat and a rhythmic step sequence; each station has three levels to choose from; after each one, students write a first-person verb on the card, such as 'I held,' 'I coordinated' or 'I lasted' (15 min).
- Each student finishes the card with a sentence about the ability they value most and how it helps in daily life (4 min).
- Optional closing circle: anyone who wants to shares one sentence; everyone else just listens (3 min).
Rules
- No comments at all about anyone's body, positive or negative.
- Nobody is timed or compared with anyone else.
- Each student chooses their level at every station and can change it at any time.
- Jump ropes are used with at least 6 feet of clear space all around.
Variations
Easier
Four stations with one very accessible level.
Standard
Six stations with three levels to choose from and a verb card.
Harder
Each student designs a new level for one station with a classmate's different needs in mind.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: every station has a wheelchair or seated version, such as trunk balance or throwing a ball up.
- Students in larger bodies: choose their level freely, with no reference to weight; jogging or brisk walking is offered.
- Autism: has the circuit in pictograms and can always do the stations in the same order.
Learning goals
- Value one's body for what it can do rather than how it looks.
- Explore different physical abilities while choosing the level independently.
- Practice respectful language about bodies.
Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip
Remove or cover any mirrors in the room. If someone comments on a body, pause briefly and redirect to what was done, without making it a big deal.
