Weekly Activity App Check-In
Seated with a phone or tablet, each student reviews their week in a fitness tracking app, such as steps, active minutes, or sleep, and compares the numbers with health guidelines. Students practice thinking critically about technology and planning their own fitness program.
How to play
- Students sit with their device and a worksheet with three columns: app data, healthy guideline, and self-rating (1 minute).
- Each student writes down their average daily steps, minutes of moderate-to-vigorous activity, and hours of sleep for the past 7 days (2 minutes).
- The teacher reviews the guidelines: at least 60 minutes a day of moderate-to-vigorous activity for teens and 8 to 10 hours of sleep.
- Each student marks each number with a check or an X and writes one specific adjustment for the coming week (2 minutes).
- In pairs, students take 1 minute to discuss how reliable the data is and what the app doesn't measure, then put devices away (2 minutes).
Rules
- Each student decides what data to share; no one looks at someone else's phone without permission.
- Phones are used only for the fitness app during the set time.
- The data is a guide, not a grade.
- Students without a device or app use a paper log of their week.
Variations
Easier
Review just one number, daily steps, and compare it with a personal goal.
Standard
Review steps, active minutes, and sleep, and set one adjustment for next week.
Harder
Export four weeks of data and analyze the trend on a graph.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: use adapted data, such as wheelchair push minutes or general active minutes instead of steps.
- Visual impairment: turn on the device's screen reader or text zoom features.
- Students without a device: they keep a paper activity log during the week and analyze it the same way.
Learning goals
- Interpret data from a fitness app critically.
- Compare their own activity level with health guidelines.
- Propose a realistic adjustment to their personal fitness plan.

Teacher tip
Give a week's notice so students who want to can turn on tracking on their phones. Keep paper logs on hand so no one is left out for not having a phone.
