Active Listening Partner Debrief
Sitting face to face, each student talks for 90 seconds about a challenge from class while their partner listens without interrupting and then paraphrases what they heard. Students practice active listening, empathy, and managing emotions after exercise.
How to play
- Each student sits facing a partner they didn't work with during class, about 3 feet apart (1 minute).
- The teacher poses the question: "What moment today was hardest for you, and how did you handle it?"
- First turn: A talks for 90 seconds; B listens while making eye contact and nodding, without saying a word.
- B sums up in 30 seconds what they heard, starting with "What I heard you say is...", and A confirms or corrects.
- Switch roles using the same steps (2 minutes) and close with 1 minute of slow, silent breathing while seated (2 minutes).
Rules
- The listener doesn't interrupt, give advice, or share their own story.
- What's said stays between the two partners.
- If a speaker finishes before 90 seconds, both stay quiet until the signal.
- Stay seated on the floor or a bench with nothing in your hands.
Variations
Easier
Shorten turns to 45 seconds and use a simpler question, such as "What did you enjoy today?"
Standard
90-second turns with a 30-second paraphrase.
Harder
The listener must also name the main emotion they picked up from their partner.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the partner sits at the same height, on a chair or bench, to talk face to face.
- Hearing impairment: partners face each other in good light for lip reading, or use sign language if both know it.
- Shyness or autism: the student can choose a trusted partner and start as the listener.
Learning goals
- Practice active listening without interrupting or judging.
- Put into words how they handled challenges during class.
- Check understanding by paraphrasing.
Teacher tip
Call out the time and signal changes with a soft clap. Ninety seconds without talking feels long at first; say so up front so the silence doesn't feel awkward.
