5-4-3-2-1 Sensory Grounding While Stretching
A sensory grounding technique: students name five things they see, four they feel, three they hear, two they smell and one they taste while doing gentle stretches. It helps them come down from game intensity and is a useful tool when they freeze up or feel panicky.
How to play
- Seated on the ground, explain the technique and when to use it, for example when your mind goes blank on a test (1 min).
- Five things you see while doing a side neck stretch on each side (1 min).
- Four body sensations during a seated hamstring stretch (1 min).
- Three sounds and two smells with eyes closed in butterfly pose (1 min).
- One taste and three slow breaths; in pairs, each student shares a detail that surprised them (2 min).
Rules
- Everything is done silently in your head; talking only happens in the last step.
- No one has to close their eyes if they don't want to.
- Stretches are gentle with no bouncing.
Variations
Easier
Cut it down to three senses: sight, touch and hearing.
Standard
The full 5-4-3-2-1 sequence with one stretch for each phase.
Harder
Each student guides a partner through the sequence, swapping in stretches of their choice.
Adaptations
- Visual impairment: replace sight with five textures they can touch nearby.
- Hearing impairment: replace hearing with three vibrations or movements they can notice.
- Limited mobility: do upper-body stretches seated in the wheelchair.
Learning goals
- Learn and use a sensory grounding technique.
- Consciously lower arousal after the main activity.
- Identify personal situations where the technique would help.
Teacher tip
Ask students to memorize it: it's easy to recall in a nervous moment. It works better outdoors than in the gym because there's more to notice.
