Active Isolated Stretching with a Rope
A stretching method where students contract the opposite muscle, hold the stretch for only two seconds with help from a rope, and repeat 8–10 times. It aids leg recovery and lets students compare active and static stretching.
How to play
- Each student has a folded jump rope and a yoga mat; the teacher explains the rhythm: lift actively, assist 2 seconds with the rope, lower (1 min).
- Hamstrings: lying down, rope around the sole of the foot; lift the straight leg by tightening the quad, assist 2 seconds with the rope, lower; 8 reps per leg (3 min).
- Calves: same position, pull the toes toward you with the rope for 2 seconds; 8 reps per leg (2 min).
- Adductors: rope on the inside of the foot, swing the leg out using the glutes, assist 2 seconds, return; 8 per leg (2 min).
- Compare with a partner how each leg feels and put the ropes away (2 min).
Rules
- The rope only helps at the end; the muscle starts the movement.
- Never hold longer than 2 seconds and never yank.
- Exhale during the stretch and don't hold your breath.
Variations
Easier
Work only the hamstrings with 6 reps per leg.
Standard
Do hamstrings, calves, and adductors with 8 reps each.
Harder
Stretch only one leg, then compare its range with the other leg in a leg-raise test.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: do the upper-body version (chest and shoulders) seated with the rope.
- Visual impairment: a partner counts out loud: "lift, assist, down."
- Low flexibility: keep the knee slightly bent and lower the height.
Learning goals
- Apply an active stretching method for recovery.
- Compare how active and static stretching feel.
- Use the rope safely as an assist.
Equipment for a class of 25
- individual jump ropes: 25
- yoga mats: 25
Teacher tip
Students tend to pull hard and hold, so count out loud: "one-two, down." It works especially well after running or soccer lessons.
