Wall Sit and Single-Leg Bridge: Left vs. Right
In pairs, students measure lower-body endurance with the wall sit and the single-leg glute bridge, comparing both sides. They learn to spot imbalances and add corrective exercises to their program.
How to play
- Pairs get a mat by the wall, a stopwatch, and a worksheet. Show the positions: knees at 90° against the wall, and for the bridge, hips level with one foot planted (3 min).
- Wall sit: the performer holds as long as possible; the partner stops the clock if the thighs rise or the hands touch the legs. Switch roles (6 min).
- Single-leg bridge: reps at a 2-second pace up and down until the hips tilt or the pace breaks. Do the right leg, then the left (6 min).
- Switch roles for the bridge (4 min).
- Each student calculates the difference between sides: if it's over 15%, they add an extra set for the weaker side to their program (3 min).
Rules
- Stop the test at any knee or low-back pain.
- Keep the back against the wall and feet hip-width apart.
- The partner counts out loud and calls form breaks.
Variations
Easier
Wall sit at a higher angle and a two-leg bridge for 30 seconds.
Standard
Wall sit to form failure and single-leg bridge on each side.
Harder
Add a single-leg wall sit, lightly supported by the other foot, as a third test.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: test arm endurance with elbow extensions using the same left-right comparison.
- Autism: show photos of correct positions and use a steady beep for counting.
- Low fitness level: record the score without comparing to others and retest in three weeks.
Learning goals
- Measure isometric and dynamic lower-body endurance.
- Identify differences between right and left legs.
- Add corrective exercises to a personal program.
Equipment for a class of 25
- yoga mats: 13
- stopwatch: 13
- worksheets: 25
Teacher tip
Watch for students dropping the chest to lift higher in the bridge; the hips should stay level. Remind them not to hold their breath during the wall sit.
