Wall Bar Climber Pass-By
Two climbers start at opposite ends of a low traverse on the wall bars and must pass each other without stepping down, working out together whether one goes over, outside, or under the other. Students practice body control while climbing, teamwork, and planning moves.
How to play
- Setup (3 min): mats at the base of the wall bars and a colored ribbon tied on the third rung marks the highest the feet can go.
- Technical warm-up (4 min): each student traverses sideways solo and back, arms straight and feet below the ribbon.
- In pairs, each climber starts at one end of a four-section stretch of wall bars and they move toward each other.
- When they meet they must pass without touching the floor: one hugs the bars while the other goes around the outside, or one climbs a rung and the other passes underneath.
- Each successful pass scores a point for the pair; if anyone touches the floor, both return to their ends. Play three 3-minute rounds with rests.
- Wrap-up (2 min): pairs explain which passing strategy worked and demonstrate it.
Rules
- Feet never go above the ribbon.
- Wrap your thumb around the bar; never grip with just your fingers.
- If you get tired, climb down under control and say so; never jump from the top.
- Only one pair per section of wall bars.
Variations
Easier
Hang a hoop as an extra hold for the pass and allow one floor touch.
Standard
Pass without touching the floor on a four-section stretch, three rounds.
Harder
One climber can't use one hand during the pass and the partner must help.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student traverses hand over hand with feet on a gym bench or plans the pair's strategy from the floor.
- Autism: explain the sequence with drawings and pair the student with a trusted classmate.
- Fitness level: students with less strength rest with straight arms and use a three-section stretch.
Learning goals
- Move while climbing with control and efficient effort.
- Work with a partner to solve a movement problem at low height.
- Plan moves before making them.
Equipment for a class of 25
- wall bars: 12
- mats: 10
- colored ribbons: 6
Teacher tip
Keep cueing straight arms so students don't burn out, and check that the wall bars are securely anchored. If there is a lot of waiting, set up a floor circuit next to them.
