Wall Badminton: Tape Line as the Net
Play against a smooth wall with a tape line at net height: the shuttle must strike above it. It lets you practice clears, drives and drops without nets or courts.
How to play
- Each pair puts a horizontal tape line about 1.5 m up the wall and another on the floor 2 m from the wall (3 min).
- Solo shots against the wall above the tape: quick forehand and backhand drives (4 min).
- In pairs, alternate shots: one hits, the other plays the rebound (5 min).
- Game to 7: point if the opponent fails to hit above the tape, or if the shuttle lands short of the floor line after hitting the wall (6 min).
- Collect equipment and peel the tape off the wall (2 min).
Rules
- Shots must alternate; no hitting twice in a row.
- Each pair uses at least 3 m of wall.
- No hard shots at the wall while someone is collecting.
Variations
Easier
Balloon or foam ball and a lower line.
Standard
Plastic shuttle and a line at 1.5 m.
Harder
Overhead shots only (clears against the wall).
Adaptations
- Low vision: high-contrast tape line and a bright foam ball.
- Wheelchair users: line at seated shoulder height and 3 m of clear space.
- Injured wrist: plays with the other hand or keeps score.
Learning goals
- Keep striking practice going without a full court.
- Alternate shots with a partner.
- Play fair in a shared space.
Equipment for a class of 25
- masking tape: 7
- badminton rackets: 28
- shuttlecocks: 14
Teacher tip
Feather shuttles break against the wall, so use plastic ones or light foam balls. Check with the school before taping painted walls.
