Walk-and-Review: Study Flashcards on the Move
A moving study routine: partners walk a loop at a brisk pace while quizzing each other with their own flashcards from any class. It builds physical activity as a study aid, light aerobic endurance, and cooperation.
How to play
- In the previous class, ask students to bring 15 flashcards (question front, answer back) for a class with an upcoming test. Form pairs and mark a 200 m loop with cones (2 min).
- Block 1 (6 min): brisk walking; A quizzes and B answers. Correct cards go to A's right hand, missed ones to the left.
- Block 2 (6 min): switch roles while still walking briskly.
- Missed-card block (4 min): review only both partners' missed cards, at an easy jog if they can still talk.
- Wrap-up (2 min): count recovered cards and discuss reviewing on the move at home, at a park, or on the way to school.
Rules
- The pace must let you talk without gasping.
- Cards in hand; no phones.
- Safety: walk on the right and pass on the left.
Variations
Easier
Eight cards at a comfortable walking pace.
Standard
Two 6-minute brisk walking blocks and a missed-card block at a jog.
Harder
Before answering, do a movement like 3 lunges or a full turn.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the loop in a wheelchair at their own pace, or a shorter, flat route.
- Visual impairment: the partner reads aloud and large-print cards are used.
- Fitness level: each pair sets a pace between brisk walking and an easy jog.
Learning goals
- Build moderate physical activity into a study routine.
- Sustain brisk walking for 16 minutes.
- Work with a partner to review class content.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cards: 375
- cones: 8
Teacher tip
Keep spare health-topic flashcards for anyone who forgets theirs. It works especially well during finals, when activity levels tend to drop.
