Volleyball: Setting to Zones 4 and 2 with Target Hoops
Trios practice overhead setting: a passer sends the ball to zone 2-3, the setter squares up and sets forward to zone 4 or backward to zone 2, where a teammate holds a hoop up high. Balls that go through the hoop are recorded.
How to play
- Review the overhead pass: hands forming a triangle above the forehead, legs and arms extending together (3 min).
- Trios: passer in zone 6, setter in zone 2-3 and a teammate holding a hoop about 3 ft above the net in zone 4 (2 min).
- Front sets to zone 4; ten tries per setter, then rotate (7 min).
- Back sets to zone 2, arching the back slightly without turning the shoulders (7 min).
- Final round: the hoop holder shouts the zone at the last moment and the setter chooses (4 min).
- Record each setter's hits by zone on the sheet (2 min).
Rules
- The hoop holder keeps arms straight and moves away if the ball heads for their face.
- Sets are made with the fingers only; an obvious double contact is repeated.
- Don't set a low ball: if it arrives below the chest, play it with the forearms.
- Rotate through the three roles every ten balls.
Variations
Easier
Set to zone 4 without a hoop, to a partner who catches the ball.
Standard
Sets to zones 4 and 2 through the hoop, with the zone called in advance.
Harder
A real serve-receive pass and the zone chosen in the last second.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair user: sets from the chair in zone 3 with a light ball and a lower hoop.
- Visual impairment: sets a ball with a bell toward the hoop holder's voice.
- Finger injury: holds the hoop and records hits.
Learning goals
- Set accurately forward and backward.
- Square the body to the attack zone before contact.
- Record and compare one's own accuracy in each direction.

Teacher tip
Back sets work better if the setter stands sideways to the net with the left shoulder toward it. Use big hoops at first.
