Volleyball: Hitter Coverage Off the Block
When a teammate attacks, the rest of the team forms a low semicircle around them to dig any ball that comes back off the opponent's block. It builds coverage positioning, a low defensive stance and restarting the attack after the dig.
How to play
- Make teams of 6. On the other side of the net, two students standing on the floor hold a mat upright above the net; it acts as the block and sends the ball back.
- Explain coverage (3 min): three players in a semicircle close to the hitter, 3 to 6 ft away, and two more deeper in the back court, all in a low stance.
- The teacher tosses to the setter, who sets zone 4, and the hitter spikes into the mat; the rest of the team must dig the rebound and rebuild the attack.
- Scoring: 1 point for digging the rebound, 2 for digging it and attacking it over the net. Each team does sets of 8 attacks and rotates positions after each set.
- Final 6-on-6 game (8 min): every time a team digs a blocked ball and wins the rally, it earns 2 points.
Rules
- Students holding the mat stay on the floor and don't jump; they stand sideways so the ball doesn't hit them in the face.
- Hitters can't touch the net or land on the other side of the court.
- No diving on the floor; get to the ball with footwork and a low stance.
Variations
Easier
The hitter throws the ball into the mat with two hands instead of spiking.
Standard
Spike into a mat block with semicircle coverage and rebuild the attack.
Harder
Two students form a real jumping block and the hitter can tool the block on purpose (hit it off the blockers' hands out of bounds).
Adaptations
- A student with limited mobility can be the permanent setter or the one tossing balls from the side.
- For students with visual impairments, use a brightly colored ball and call "Block!" out loud on contact.
- With lower fitness levels, cut sets to 5 attacks and lengthen the breaks.
Learning goals
- Get into coverage around the hitter in a low stance.
- Dig balls off the block and rebuild the attack.
- Understand that attacking is a team action, not an individual one.

Teacher tip
Students tend to stand and watch the hitter, so coach "When my teammate swings, I get low." Rotate the mat holders every set so they don't get tired.
