Volleyball Bingo-Bango-Bongo
Six-on-six volleyball game where a team only earns a big point by winning three rallies in a row: off a serve, off a free ball, and off a down ball. Students work on consistency, transition from defense to offense, and team focus.
How to play
- Make four teams of 6 (one with 7) and use two courts. Each court has a ball cart next to the teacher or a student feeder (2 min).
- Explain the sequence: bingo is a serve the receiving team must turn into a point; bango is a free ball tossed over the net; bongo is a down ball hit from the floor into the court (3 min).
- If the team wins all three rallies in a row, they score a big point; if they lose any of them, they restart at bingo and the other team receives the next sequence (2 min).
- Play to 3 big points. After each big point, both teams rotate one spot (12 min).
- Final reflection: each team names its weakest phase and suggests one concrete fix for next class (6 min).
Rules
- Every rally is played out; it only counts if the team receiving the sequence wins it.
- The free ball is tossed high with two hands, not trying to score.
- Safety: the feeder stands outside the sideline behind a cone, never under the net.
Variations
Easier
Winning two of the three rallies in a row earns the big point.
Standard
Three rallies in a row for a big point; game to 3 big points.
Harder
Replace the third rally with a live attack from the opponent after their own set.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student can be a feeder or scorekeeper, or play front row with an extra contact.
- Autism: call out and show a visual card with the current phase before each ball.
- Lower skill: allow catching the serve receive and tossing it to the setter.
Learning goals
- Maintain team consistency over several rallies in a row.
- Adjust team defense to each type of ball received.
- Value team effort and support teammates after a mistake.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Volleyballs: 12
- Nets: 2
- Pinnies: 26
Teacher tip
This drill is demanding and can be frustrating: encourage after every mistake and set a time cap if a team gets stuck. Keep the feeders working at a fast pace so nobody waits around.
