Voice-Guided Basketball Shooting
In groups of three, a blindfolded shooter shoots at the basket from close range, guided by the voice and claps of a partner under the hoop, while another partner rebounds. Students practice shooting form, orienting by sound, and trust.
How to play
- Place 5 cones in a semicircle 1.5 m (5 ft) from each basket and 5 more at 2.5 m (8 ft). Groups of three: shooter, guide, and rebounder; two groups per basket, taking turns.
- The guide stands under the hoop clapping and saying "up here." The blindfolded shooter, on a cone, lines up feet and shoulders toward the voice.
- The rebounder places the foam ball in the shooter's hands and says "ready." After the shot, the shooter stays still with hands in front of the face until hearing "got it."
- The guide gives feedback: "short," "long," "left." Backboard, 1 point; rim, 2; basket, 3. Five shots per turn, then rotate; each turn takes a little over 1 minute.
- After two rotations, move to the 2.5 m cones and finish with a challenge: 15 points for the group.
Rules
- Foam balls only.
- The shooter does not move after shooting until hearing "got it."
- The guide steps out from under the hoop just before the shot while still clapping.
- The two groups at a basket never shoot at the same time.
Variations
Easier
A low basket or a hoop held at 1.5 m, with the first shot of each set taken with eyes open.
Standard
Five blindfolded shots from 1.5 m, guided by voice and claps.
Harder
The guide gives a single clap and no feedback afterward.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student shoots from the wheelchair at a low basket or a hoop held by a classmate.
- Visual impairment: the student plays without a blindfold and can explain the cues they use.
- Skill level: advanced students shoot one-handed from 3 m (10 ft).
Learning goals
- Maintain shooting form without visual cues.
- Turn the body toward a sound before shooting.
- Give precise feedback and protect a partner's safety.
Equipment for a class of 25
- foam balls: 6
- blindfolds: 8
- cones: 30
- basketball hoops: 4
Teacher tip
Review the shot with eyes open for a couple of minutes first. The protective stance after the shot builds a good safety habit, even with foam balls.
