Video Portfolio: Second Take and Side-by-Side Review
The second session of a video portfolio on a skill each student has chosen (cartwheel, jump shot, volleyball serve, block start...). Students record a new take from the same angle as the first one, compare both with a three-point guide and write a short portfolio entry on what has changed and what they will work on next.
How to play
- Each student reviews their first video on the tablet and the three-point guide for their skill (4 min).
- Practice in groups of three in areas by skill: one performs, one watches one key point and the third waits; rotate every 2 minutes (9 min).
- Record the second take: the partner stands at the same cone-marked spot used for the first recording and films three attempts (6 min).
- Partners compare the first and new takes, pausing at the key moment for each point on the guide (6 min).
- Portfolio entry: which point improved, which one stayed the same and which drill they will do in the next practice (5 min).
Rules
- Only students who give permission are filmed, and videos are saved to the school folder, never on social media or personal phones.
- Gymnastics skills are practiced on mats with a spotter.
- The camera is held from outside the practice area.
- Each student comments on their own video first; the partner only adds afterward.
Variations
Easier
The guide has a single key point and only one take is compared.
Standard
A second take from the same angle, comparison with a three-point guide and a written entry.
Harder
Use slow motion or a drawing app to measure angles and add a third take after the correction.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: chooses a skill that can be done from the wheelchair, such as a chest pass or a target throw.
- Visual impairment: the partner describes the video in detail, combined with the student's own feel and physical guidance of the movement.
- Students who do not want to be filmed: the partner fills in a live observation checklist instead of video.
Learning goals
- Assess personal progress in a skill using objective evidence.
- Analyze technique based on observable key points.
- Plan the next practice based on self-assessment.
Equipment for a class of 25
- tablets or phones: 8
- mats: 8
- cones: 8
- worksheets: 30
Teacher tip
Tape the filming spot from the first session on the floor: without the same angle the comparison loses its value. Check students' photo consent before you start.
