Vape Cloud: The Tag Game That Steals Your Air
A tag game where taggers carry a «vape cloud» that forces players to slow down for a while. It opens a conversation about how smoking and vaping affect breathing and how to say no.

How to play
- Quick intro: smoke and vape aerosol irritate the airways, and most vapes contain nicotine, which is addictive. Hand out four pinnies and four «cloud» balls (2 min).
- Round 1: carriers tag with the ball in hand. A tagged player walks for 15 seconds counting out loud, then runs again (4 min).
- Pause: what was it like to play at a slower pace? Link it to feeling short of breath in a game (2 min).
- Round 2, «spread»: the carrier can hand the cloud to the person tagged, who becomes a new carrier after their 15-second walk (4 min).
- Round 3, «clean air»: hoops are safe zones, but to step in you must say out loud a refusal line, a new one every time, like «No thanks, I've got a game Saturday» (5 min).
- Wrap-up: write the class's three favorite refusal lines on the board (3 min).
Rules
- Tag with the ball in your hand; never throw it.
- The 15 seconds are counted out loud while walking.
- You can stay in a safe zone for only 5 seconds.
- Nobody laughs at a refusal line: they all count.
Variations
Easier
Three carriers and a 10-second walk.
Standard
Four carriers and 15 seconds.
Harder
Five carriers, 20 seconds, and safe zones that move every minute.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: guards a hoop, decides whether a line is new, and can tag passers-by with the ball.
- Students with asthma: alternate running and walking with the inhaler nearby; never ask them to «push through» breathlessness.
- Shy or anxious students: may carry a written refusal line or say it together with a friend.
Learning goals
- Sustain high-intensity activity with active rest.
- Learn in simple terms how smoking and vaping affect breathing.
- Practice assertive responses to peer pressure.
Equipment for a class of 25
- foam balls: 4
- hula hoops: 6
- pinnies: 4
Teacher tip
Do not turn this into a lecture: the game does the talking, and the pause lasts two minutes. Avoid lines that blame families who smoke; keep the focus on students' own choices.
