Up-Down Song Challenge: Squats and Push-Ups on Cue
Using a song that repeats a key word, students lower into a squat or push-up hold and only come up when they hear the word. It builds isometric and dynamic muscular endurance, attention to a sound cue and the ability to handle muscle fatigue.
How to play
- Pick a song about three minutes long with one word that repeats often; explain the game without sharing the full lyrics: hear the word, go up; otherwise hold low (2 min).
- Practice (2 min): half the song with a partial squat and no pressure.
- Challenge 1 (4 min): the full song in a squat; anyone who can't hold it leans against the wall and keeps following the cue.
- Rest (2 min): walk and shake out the legs.
- Challenge 2 (4 min): the full song in a push-up, holding low with elbows at 90 degrees or with knees down.
- Wrap-up (2 min): students note the minute they switched to an easier version to compare in future lessons.
Rules
- Nobody is out: if you can't hold it, switch to an easier version and keep going.
- In the squat, knees track over the toes and the back stays flat.
- In the push-up, the body stays in a straight line without sagging.
- The song must be school-appropriate.
Variations
Easier
Wall sit and knee push-ups.
Standard
One full song in a free squat and another in a push-up.
Harder
Go to a deep squat and add a jump on the way up.
Adaptations
- For limited mobility, do it seated with arm raises that go up on the word and down without it.
- For students who are deaf or hard of hearing, the teacher holds up a card every time the key word plays.
- Students with lower fitness do half the song for each challenge.
Learning goals
- Hold isometric contractions for extended time.
- Respond accurately to a sound cue.
- Recognize the feeling of local muscle fatigue.
Equipment for a class of 25
- music: 1
- yoga mats: 25
Teacher tip
You can use an instrumental track and call the key word yourself to control timing. Atmosphere matters: celebrate students who switch versions and keep going.
